This is a spiritual or “slave song” from the pre-Civil War era.
I First heard it recorded by Mississippi John Hurt.
Taj Mahal’s recording of this song accompanied by N. Ravikiran and V.M. Bhatt while Taj was in India was done as an Indian raga. It is well worth finding. That version gives me the shivers.
I played this song for years singing it word for word as John Hurt had, until I decided to record it. I just couldn’t get my heart all the way into it until I re-wrote the lyrics and changed the meaning of the song to something that’s real to me.
